《團長的話》

Dear DSSC members:

A year ago when we had a new year party at my home, we sang "Auld Lang Syne" together in 2 parts. Our Music Advisor Ling Jing played the piano and taught us how to sing. We said at that time that we would like to sing this song as our tradition in our future New Year Parties, if possible. We did not have a new year party when the year 2005 ended, however we have a chance to sing this song to celebrate the coming of the new lunar year. So please bring the music of 憶往日(Chinese version of Auld Lang Syne) with you this Sunday.

Some members think that this song is too sad to sing at a happy occasion such as new year party. Let me explain why I do not share this view. This song is about a long lasting friendship and fellowship, and it has become the traditional way of greeting the New Year by Americans and other Westerners. This song is an old Scottish song and new verses were added later by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. Chinese have adopted different versions of translation and sometimes it is sang at a graduation ceremony. This may be why some members feel this song is for a sad occasion, but it is not.

The Chinese lyric in 憶往日 is beautifully written and it sheds even more colorful lights and deeper emotion on the forever lasting friendship than the original lyric. Personally I like this Chinese version much better than the original because it is terrifically Chinese, easy to relate, and it resonates with the spirit of the SeaSky Choir song. Basically I think this is a song of Vive La Friendship and it is a meaningful song to sing at an occasion such as New Year party. So please bring the music and let's sign it to celebrate our new and old acquaintances and for the long lasting friendship.

If you know any old members who are coming to the party, please feel free to ask them to bring the music.

1. Auld Lang Syne — English Language: "old long since" — might be better translated as "old long ago", "times gone by", or "days gone by".

2. In Scots Language: “Syne” is pronounced like the English word "sign"

Hello All DSSC Officers,

Wow! Nowadays you can't live without checking your email daily. Because I was very busy for the last 3 days and didn't have time to check my emails. Today I found 25 emails in my inbox. I spent at least 20 minutes to read them.

By reading your emails, I learned that we, the officers, won't have to talk about our job descriptions at the New Years Party. Is that correct?

I think every member keeping a copy of the officers list is a good idea.

I think Susan Wu is the right candidate for a VP position. She knows a lot of people in the Chinese community. She is very competent for this job and also she lives in the same area as the president so that it is much easier for them to work together. I will definitely vote for her.
